Wandered into a boiler room at a plant in Gary and saw a pipe patch that looked like a 3 year old did it

I was down at the old US Steel plant in Gary last week doing some weld inspections and found this steam line patch job that was straight up scary. Someone had used what looked like hose clamps and bathroom caulk to seal a 4 inch crack in a 150 psi line. I snapped a pic and sent it to my foreman and he laughed for like 5 minutes straight before calling the plant manager. Has anyone else run into sketchy field repairs that made you double check your insurance?

TIL you can't just wing it with a straight razor on a first-time client

Had a guy come in last Tuesday asking for a clean shave, first time with a straight razor. I got nervous halfway through and my hand slipped a tiny bit, gave him a nick under his nose that bled for like 10 minutes. He was chill about it but I learned I need to practice on my own leg more before trying that again. Anyone else have a close call story like that?

The faucet that somehow aged 50 years in 6 months

I moved into an apartment in Austin last February and the kitchen faucet was fine. Six months later it looks like it survived a war - the chrome is peeling off in chunks and there's this weird green crust around the base. My landlord says it's because hard water here is aggressive but I've never seen anything corrode that fast. Has anyone else dealt with a fixture just falling apart that quick?

I finally picked spray foam over rigid board for my container roof

Last spring I was building out my first container home in Phoenix and had to decide between spray foam insulation and rigid foam boards for the roof. I went with closed cell spray foam because I heard it seals better against metal. The crew sprayed about 4 inches on the ceiling and it cost me $1,200 for a 20 foot container. Now in July when it's 110 out, the inside stays around 78 without running the AC all day. I did notice the foam is a pain if you ever need to drill into the ceiling for wiring. Have you guys had trouble working around spray foam after it sets?

Tried two dark mode palettes side by side and one made my eyes hurt after 20 minutes

I was building a dark theme for a reading app last weekend and tested a pure black background (#000) against a dark gray (#1a1a2e). The black one felt sleek at first but after scrolling for 20 minutes I got that weird eye strain headache (you know the one). Has anyone else found that near-black grays work way better for long reading sessions than true black?

Auto layout overrides saved my sanity on a 3-day deadline

I was manually adjusting spacing on 12 different button states for a client pitch and nearly lost it until I realized you can override auto layout properties on nested components directly. Why does nobody mention you can toggle 'layout mode' in the instance menu instead of detaching everything?

My buddy made me rethink watching true crime shows

My friend Jake said he stopped watching true crime because it just makes him paranoid about stuff that's super rare. He asked why I waste hours on stories about killers when I could watch something that doesn't make me jump at every noise. Has anyone else had a friend call them out like that?

Last Tuesday was my best design day in months

I had been stuck on a landing page for a real estate client for like a week. Nothing was clicking, every sketch looked flat and boring. Then I took my coffee outside, sat on my porch, and just doodled without thinking. That sketch turned into the whole layout and the client loved it same day. Anyone else have random breakthroughs when you stop forcing it?

Had my dentist talk me out of a conspiracy theory about fluoride last Thursday

I was sitting in the chair getting a cleaning and brought up how I had been reading about fluoride being a government mind control thing. My dentist, Dr. Patel, just laughed and asked me if I knew the actual concentration levels in our tap water here in Phoenix. She pulled out a chart showing how it's 0.7 parts per million and said at that level it just hardens enamel and nothing else. I still have some doubts but her calm breakdown with real numbers kind of hit different. Has anyone else had a professional completely dismantle a theory you were holding onto?

Sat in on a town council meeting last night and noticed something weird about how local agencies pitch

I went to a town council meeting in my area Tuesday night and saw three different marketing agencies present their bids for a tourism campaign. One agency spent 20 minutes talking about data and analytics while the other just showed pretty pictures of the town with no strategy. The council ended up picking the middle ground one but I kept wondering if we overcomplicate things for clients or if they actually need the details. Has anyone else watched how clients react to pitches compared to what we think they want?
