Gave a rusty chain a 3 hour white vinegar bath and now I'm questioning everything
Customer brought in a 1998 Trek with a chain so crunchy you could hear it from the stand, so I figured why not soak it in white vinegar for 3 hours since I had nothing else going on that Tuesday at the shop. Pulled it out, hit it with a wire brush, and the thing came out looking almost new, but the vinegar ate into the rollers and I could feel play in every single link when I flexed it by hand. Anyone else mess with household stuff like this on customer bikes, or do you just tell them the $18 chain is the only real answer?
