Just realized the Park Tool guy in Denver was wrong about greasing square taper spindles
Took a class at the Denver Bike Co-op last month and the instructor said dry square taper is the way, but I've been greasing them for 15 seasons on rentals and never once had a crank back off. Anyone else still greasing or am I just lucky?
I used to grease every square taper I touched, swore by it, then had a crank on a buddy's old Univega keep loosening no matter how hard I torqued it. Pulled it apart and the grease had let it creep just enough to wallow out the taper. Cleaned it dry, torqued to spec, never moved again. Now I go dry on the spindle and just a touch of grease on the bolt threads, and I haven't lost a crank since.
