Shoutout to the guy at the Tucson co-op who taught me to check spoke tension by ear
Last Tuesday I was truing a rear wheel on a 90s hardtail and got the lateral wobble out in about 10 minutes, but the wheel still felt mushy when I squeezed the spokes. The old mechanic next to me, Ray, leaned over and said your tension is all over the place, listen to it, then he plucked each spoke like a guitar string. Sure enough, 4 spokes on the drive side were way looser than the rest, so I tightened them a quarter turn at a time until they all rang close to the same note. Rode it around the block and it felt solid for the first time. Do you all use a tensiometer or just go by feel and sound like Ray does?
