Shoutout to the mechanic who pointed out my chain lube method was backwards
I was putting the lube on the top of the chain and letting it drip down for years. He saw me do it last week and said 'You're just lubing the outside, the pins need it from the inside.' I've been doing it wrong this whole time. How do you guys apply chain lube to make sure it gets where it needs to go?

Wait, you're supposed to lube from the inside? I always thought the drip-down method was fine, just getting it on there was the point. That mechanic is totally right though, the lube needs to get into the rollers and pins. Now I put a drop on each link pin while slowly spinning the pedals backwards. It takes a bit longer but the chain runs so much quieter. What kind of lube do you use now that you're doing it this way?

My old chain lasted years with the drip-down method, @janahenderson.
