Shoutout to the old Park Tool crank puller, I finally get why nobody sells the jaw type anymore
I fought this for years. I had one of those jaw style pullers that grabs the outside of the crank arm and I thought it was fine because I only did maybe 4 or 5 square taper jobs a month at my place outside Akron. Last Tuesday a guy brought in a 90s Trek 820 with cranks that had been on there since who knows when, and that jaw tool kept slipping off no matter how hard I cranked the bolt down. I finally dug out the old Park CCP-22 that threads into the extractor hole and it popped the arm off in about 10 seconds with almost no effort. The threads do all the grabbing, so there is nothing to slip, and it doesn't chew up the finish either. I felt pretty dumb standing there holding the jaw tool after fighting it for 20 minutes. Does anyone still keep a jaw style puller around for the rare crank with no extractor threads, or did you all toss yours?
