Snapped a chain mid-century on a group ride, rookie mistake
I was about 14 miles into a Saturday group ride near Boulder and pushed hard out of a stoplight. The chain let go with a crack and wrapped around the rear derailleur pretty bad. I had a spare quick link but no chain tool, so I had to borrow one from a guy on a gravel bike who happened to carry a park tool. Took us about 20 minutes to shorten the chain to a working length, and I rode the last 10 miles in the small ring to avoid shifting. It held fine, but now I always pack a mini chain tool, even for short rides. Has anyone else had a chain failure that took out a derailleur, and did you fix it on the road or call it quits?
