I was a snob about reality competition shows until my brother made me watch Great British Bake Off

For years I only watched serious dramas and documentaries (you know, the "prestige" stuff). My little brother kept bugging me to watch GBBO with him and I finally gave in last month. The moment that sold me was when this contestant's cake collapsed and everyone just hugged her instead of being mean about it. It's so weirdly relaxing to watch people actually be nice to each other while making desserts. Has anyone else had their taste in shows completely flipped by a family member?

lucas972's pottery throwdown story is cute, but I dunno, I still think there's something off about shows that milk people crying over broken ceramics for drama. It's all still reality TV, just with a nicer coat of paint.

Oh man, this reminds me of my friend who swore she only watched true crime documentaries until her mom made her watch The Great Pottery Throwdown with her. She called me crying happy tears after an episode where a guy’s vase shattered and the host just said “it’s about the journey, not the pot.”
