My buddy in Helena told me my forge welding is all heat and no pressure

He watched me try to join some mild steel and said 'you're cooking it, not marrying it.' Has anyone else had that click moment about hammer control?

You're right about bad welds from hammering cold steel, but the phrase "heat is the real problem" might be misleading. It's more about the timing between heat and pressure.

What if the heat is the real problem though? My worst welds happened when I tried to hammer too soon on steel that wasn't hot enough. Getting the temp right makes the pressure part way easier.
