Why does nobody warn you that quenching in oil vs water is a personality test
Had a 1084 hunter blade come out of the forge last Tuesday and stood there for a solid minute debating oil or water like it was a life choice. Went with oil, no cracks, but now I'm second guessing if water would've given me that hamon line I wanted. Anyone else flip a coin on this or is it just me?
Why does everyone act like oil is the safe answer though? Oil is just slower and more forgiving, it's not magic. With 1084 you can actually get a hamon in oil if you edge quench or use a fast oil and interrupt the quench partway, it's just way harder to pull off. Water is the real personality test because you're basically racing the clock before the whole thing snaps in half. Next time try parks 50 if you can get it, it's fast enough to get some activity going but way less likely to crack than straight water.
