Hot take: I used to teach new players every rule and it killed the fun until a friend called me out
Last month at my local meetup in Portland, a guy I barely knew stopped mid-game of Scythe and said, "You're explaining like I'm taking a test, not playing a game." I was 10 minutes into the rules and hadn't touched a piece yet. He was right. I used to dump every edge case and corner rule up front because I hated getting asked mid-game. But that just made people zone out and miss the basics anyway. Now I do a 5 minute quick start, let them make mistakes, and only add a rule when it actually comes up. First game after that change, two newbies actually laughed and asked to play again. Has anyone else switched from full rules to learn-as-you-go and noticed people stick around longer?
