Finally figured out why my welds keep cracking on thick plate
Spent weeks redoing seams until a old-timer showed me the right preheat method. Now I don't waste half my day grinding out bad welds.

Man, my buddy had the exact same problem. Some guy at the scrap yard finally told him about preheat and it fixed everything.

Preheating to around 150-200 degrees Fahrenheit is common for thicker steel. What was your buddy trying to weld that needed preheat? I've seen cracks form without it, especially in old scrap metal. Did the scrap yard guy mention any specific signs that pointed to preheat being the fix? Sometimes it's about moisture or material composition, and knowing the details helps avoid the same issues.
