Overheard a foreman say 'we don't do safety walks here' yesterday

Shook me up a bit since we had a guy nearly lose two fingers to a grinder last month on a job in Gary. How do you handle a crew that treats PPE like a suggestion?

Gary, Indiana? My cousin worked a summer at a steel mill out there. Said they called hard hats "brain buckets" and half the guys treated them like a hat rack for their cigarettes. Ngl, that foreman sounds like the kind of guy who'd skip a safety meeting to go grab a coffee. The only way I've seen crews actually wear PPE is when the boss walks the floor and calls them out by name for not having it on. If the top guy doesn't care, nobody will.

That "brain bucket" thing nails it. If you want them to actually care, stop treating PPE like the solution and start asking why a guy thinks losing fingers is worth skipping a hard hat.
