A librarian told me 62% of our book club picks get abandoned by chapter 4, is that real for you too?
I was chatting with the head librarian at the Oakland branch near my place and she said most book clubs never finish what they pick. She keeps a log and told me 62% of the titles get dropped by chapter 4, usually because one loud person hated it. Now half our group wants to switch to short story collections so nobody bails, but the other half says finishing a rough book is the whole point of a club. We spent 25 minutes arguing about it instead of talking about the actual book, which is kind of funny. One guy said if we quit every slow start we never would have made it through the book we all loved two months ago. So which side are you on, do you push through a slog or cut it loose and pick something else?
