Frustrated with our book club's strict spoiler rules
It means we miss out on discussing the book's best parts just to keep things safe.

Mike's club fell apart when they banned all plot talk.

Skip the strict rules. Look at the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones. If no one can talk about that scene, what's even the point of meeting? You end up just talking about the boring setup chapters or the font size. Good discussion needs the big moments out in the open, or it's just a waste of time.

Who gets THAT upset over a spoiled scene?

You said you'd end up just talking about font size. Are you serious? That's the backup plan? If I sat through a whole book club where people just talked about the font, I'd walk out and never come back. The whole point is the story hitting you fresh. Knowing a huge twist ahead of time is like someone telling you the ending of a magic trick before you see it. It just wrecks the whole experience.

Seriously though, what if the font size is the spoiler? Some books use tiny text shifts to show a character's mind breaking or huge bold print for a major shock. @the_tyler's club might have survived if they talked about how the words look on the page, not just what they say. That visual stuff is part of the story hitting you fresh, way before you even get to the big twist. You can spot the clues without ruining the magic trick.
