Hot take: passing a book around the circle wrecked our debates, so we started pre-picking who defends what
For two years my club in Boise just let everyone say whatever popped into their head about each pick, and half the group never got a word in while the loudest three ran the whole night. After a fight about a chapter 7 cliffhanger that went nowhere, I started handing out roles by email three days ahead, one person for each side of the big question, one to play devil's advocate, one to keep time. Now we get through way more ground, and the shy folks actually show up ready with notes instead of staring at the floor. We did it for the whole spring and we have not had a single meeting end with someone storming out. Does anyone else assign debate sides before the meeting, or is that too much like homework for your group?
