I finally cracked our book club's 4 month stall with a 20 minute rule at the start of each meeting
Our club in Columbus has 11 people and we could not finish a single book since January. Every meeting turned into side talk about kids and work before we hit page 50. Two weeks ago I started a hard rule: first 20 minutes is silent reading of whatever we agreed on, phones in a bowl by the door. We got through 60 pages of the Bell Jar in one night and had the best talk we have had in a while. Then I made one person the question keeper for the next meeting so it is not always me steering. Last Tuesday we actually picked the next two books and set the dates. Anyone else tried a quiet block like this, or does your group just roll with the chaos?
