My book club debate got way too heated over a comma

Last Tuesday at the library, our group got into a 20 minute argument about whether there should be a comma before "and" in a sentence from 'The Road.' Three people nearly walked out. I had to step in and suggest we table it and vote after the meeting. Has anyone else had a grammar debate ruin a whole discussion?

Honestly that comma argument sounds like it was more dramatic than the actual book.

Omg wait, a 20 minute argument over a comma??? That's actually wild lmao. I can't believe three people almost walked out over punctuation.
