Pro tip: our club stopped picking books by vote and fights dropped to almost zero
We used to let everyone nominate a title and then vote, and two members quit after a nasty split over a 700 page novel last March in our library meeting room. Now one person hosts each month and picks the book alone, and we just argue about the story instead of the selection. Curious if other clubs hand the host full control or if that would set off a revolt.
We tried the host picks model for a year and it worked fine, but the trick was picking hosts in advance so nobody felt blindsided by a bad choice. Give the host a short list of rules, like no book over 400 pages and nothing that costs more than a paperback, and most of the grumbling goes away. Full control with zero guardrails is where clubs get burned.
