Did a side by side of dark mode vs light mode wireframes last night

Light mode won for my client review because the contrast on those thin strokes in dark mode just made everyone squint - has anyone else found dark mode better for personal work but worse for client presentations?

Walked past a 20 year old driveway in Phoenix yesterday that still looks brand new

I was out in Glendale visiting a buddy and noticed this house that had a broom finish driveway that looked maybe 2 years old max. Knocked on the door and asked the guy who did it cause I was curious. He said he poured it himself back in 2004 and just sealed it every 2 years like clockwork. Used regular old 4000 psi mix with fibers, nothing fancy. Made me think about how many jobs I see crack within 5 years because people skip the sealing or rush the cure. Anyone else notice older work holding up better than the stuff going in now?

Unpopular opinion: hand troweling is better than power troweling for small slabs

I was finishing a 10x12 patio in Portland last month and my power trowel battery died halfway through. Grabbed a hand trowel and honestly the surface came out flatter with less chatter marks. Am I crazy or do power tools just add problems on tight jobs?

Hot take: I spent 4 hours on a single icon alignment and it was worth it

Everyone says don't sweat the small stuff in UI design, right? Well I was working on a dashboard mockup last Tuesday and spent literally 4 hours nudging one icon 2 pixels left and adjusting its shadow drop. My buddy said I was crazy. But the final layout just felt balanced. Has anyone else ever gone way over time on something tiny and felt it actually made the project better?

Tried planting clover instead of grass in my front yard this spring

I live in Portland and my lawn was always a patchy mess no matter how much water I dumped on it. So last April I bought a $15 bag of white clover seed and just let it go wild. It's been 4 months now and the yard is full of bees, less watering, and my neighbor actually complimented how green it looks. Has anyone else made the switch and seen a big difference in how much water you use?

Went back to a job site I worked on 10 years ago and barely recognized it

I was driving through my old stomping grounds near Spokane last weekend and decided to check out a strip mall I helped frame back in 2014. The whole place had this thick stucco finish over the original wood siding that we never planned for, and the roof lines were totally different too. It got me thinking about how much building codes and client tastes have shifted since then, especially with how fast materials get swapped out. Has anyone else gone back to an old project and felt like you were looking at someone else's work?

Discovered my cheap multimeter was off by 0.5 volts on low range

I was chasing a phantom error on a Samsung fridge board for 2 hours last month. Finally I tested my old meter against a Fluke at a buddy's shop and found the low voltage scale was reading 0.5V too high the whole time. Has anyone else had a meter drift on them like that?

Finally found a trick for those sticky copeland governor switches

I was on a call last week in an old Otis in a building downtown. The car was running fine but every few stops it would just drop about 4 inches then re-level. Drove me nuts for 2 hours. Checked brake drag, checked door locks, even cleaned the selector tape. Finally out of frustration I took the governor switch cover off and sprayed a tiny bit of silicone lube on the hinge pin where it pivots. Fixed it instantly. Has anyone else had luck with that or is there a better way?

Switched from rope to synthetic slings for rail alignment and never looked back

I spent 3 hours trying to get a car level with rope slings on a job last Thursday in Chicago. Synthetic webbing slings grabbed the rail evenly and cut that time by more than half. Anybody else made that swap and noticed a big difference?

Had to choose between a 4x8 footer float and a 6x10 for my driveway job last week

I picked the bigger one for speed but the edges were a nightmare to manage alone in 90 degree heat anyone else fight with oversized floats on residential slabs?
