A stat from the NN Group made me rethink pure black backgrounds, and I think most of us are wrong about them
I always assumed #000000 was the gold standard for dark mode until I read a Nielsen Norman Group article about OLED screens and eye strain last month. They found that pure black can cause smearing on scroll and make text look like it's floating, which is a real problem for anyone using a phone at night. On my own site I switched from #000 to #121212 and the bounce rate on my pricing page actually went down about 8 percent over 3 weeks. Plenty of folks in this space still swear pure black is the only true dark mode and everything else is a cop out. But most big apps like Google and Twitter don't use real black either, and there's probably a reason for that. If pure black works fine for your project, what kind of text and contrast ratios are you running? I'd like to see what setups actually hold up.
