PSA: I ran my book club's picks through a 5 star filter and realized we never actually disagreed
Last Tuesday in Denver, 9 of our 11 picks over 7 meetings were all rated 4 stars or higher before we even met, so all our "big fights" were just people defending books nobody hated, and now I'm wondering if we should ban ratings until after the discussion or just read worse books on purpose.

I used to roll my eyes at the idea of hiding ratings because I figured a bad book would just make everyone fight more. Then my own group spent a whole meeting nicely agreeing about how much we loved the pick, and it hit me that zero real talk had happened in weeks. Banning the stars until after might actually be the thing that gets people to say what they really mean.
