Rant: My book club's 'consensus' pick became a 6 week hostage situation

We spent 45 minutes in Karen's living room outside Chicago arguing about whether to read Tolstoy or a thriller for January. The group picked the thriller by one vote, but two members kept pushing "War and Peace" anyway. Six weeks later we finally finished it, and I'm the jerk who says slow literary classics are a group project failure. Why do we let one loud voice drag everyone into a book that clearly doesn't fit the club's energy?

Six weeks for one book is insane, no shade but your club needs a rule about this. I would've bailed by week three and just lied about finishing it. Karen's living room sounds like a cult meeting at that point, honestly. The loud voice thing is real though, my old club had one guy who vetoed everything until we gave in. Now we vote anonymous style so nobody can guilt trip the group into another hostage situation.
