Stopped letting one loud guy pick our books, and our group went from 4 people to 11
Our book club in Tucson had shrunk to 4 of us by last spring, mostly because one member kept picking 700 page war histories nobody else finished. I tried a rotation where the host for each meeting brings 3 short books and the group votes, and suddenly people started showing up again. Last Tuesday we had 11 people arguing about a 180 page novella, which was more fun than any meeting in the past two years. Has anyone else had a picker problem like this, and did voting fix it or just move the fight somewhere else?
Watched this exact thing happen with my hiking group, except our picker was a guy who only wanted trails with at least 2,000 feet of climb. We set up a rule where whoever shows up gets one vote and the route with the most votes wins, and we went from 3 regulars to 9. The climb guy still shows up, he just grumbles a little when we pick a flat one. Voting mostly fixed it, though now the fight is about the pace instead of the route.
