TIL that reading the book before the meeting actually makes the talk better, and I owe Dana an apology
I always skipped the book and just listened to everyone else at my club in Portland because I figured the talk was the fun part, not the reading. Then Dana, who has led our group for 3 years, said the opposite of what I expected: she said the people who skip it are the ones who keep quiet after 20 minutes because they run out of things to add. Last Thursday we did a 340 page novel and I actually finished it, and for the first time I had something to say about chapter 12 that changed how two other people saw the ending. So now I'm wondering, does your club let people show up without reading, or is finishing the book a rule?
