A binder in Lisbon showed me my kettle stitch was too tight and my spines have been bulging ever since I fixed it
I was sewing a 400 page text block and the whole thing fanned open like a paper fan in the middle. He picked it up, ran his thumb down the spine, and just said "loose, looser than you think." Now I sew with about 3mm of play at each station and my books lie flat on the first try, which I never got right with the old way. Anyone else had to unlearn a grip they thought was correct for a long time?
