Vent: a customer asked why her rebind cost more than her paperback, and I couldn't give her a clean answer
She was holding a beat up copy of a paperback she paid 12 dollars for at a store in Grand Rapids, and my quote for a cloth rebind was 85. I started to explain the steps (pulling the text block, sewing new signatures, gluing up, casing in) and it turned into a ramble about hours and materials. Twenty years ago I'd have just said "labor" and left it, but now I feel like I have to justify every minute. Thing is, the paper itself has gotten cheaper and the glue has gotten worse, so half my time goes to fixing stuff that wasn't an issue back then. It made me miss the days when a customer walked in already knowing a hand rebind was not the same as a new book. How do you all handle the price talk without sounding like you're making excuses?
