Honestly, I used to think you needed a greenhouse for any real botany work. Then I saw what my neighbor in Phoenix does with just a south-facing wall and some shade cloth.

Sounds like a stretch for real botany work. That setup is basically just gardening with extra steps. Hard to take it seriously without a controlled environment.
