PSA: stop repotting your orchids in regular potting soil, I killed 3 before a grower in Tampa set me straight
I grabbed a bag of standard mix at the hardware store two springs ago and moved my phalaenopsis into it, thinking soil is soil, right? Within 3 weeks the roots went from plump and silvery green to brown mush, and the leaves started dropping one by one off the crown. The grower at a nursery in Tampa took one look and asked what I planted it in, then pulled up a bare-root orchid to show me how the roots need air gaps or they suffocate and rot. It turns out those chunky bark pieces and sphagnum moss people talk about are not fancy extras, they are the whole point, because orchids grow on tree branches in the wild, not in dirt. So what is everyone here actually using for their bark mix, and does the size of the chunk really change how often you water?
