Got cocky rushing a garden wall in the rain and had to tear out 30 feet of it
Two summers back a lady in Kalamazoo hired me for a 30 foot garden wall and I figured it was a one day job, so I pushed through even when the sky opened up around lunch. I was laying block on a half set bed and the rain was making the mortar soup, but I kept going because I did not want to come back the next day. By the time I got to the corner the blocks were sliding and I knew it was bad, so I pulled a level on it and the whole run was off by almost an inch. Ripping it out was the worst part because the mortar had already grabbed in some spots, so I was chiseling out block that I had just set an hour earlier. What I do now is keep a cheap tarp in the truck and if it starts coming down I shut it all the way down and come back, even if it costs me a trip. My dad built walls for close to 35 years and he would always tell me mud does not care how fast you are, and he was dead right. Any of you keep a rain call rule for mortar work, or do you just gamble on the weather?
