Learned to mix mortar by feel after my gauge broke on a job in Fargo
My mortar gauge broke on the first day of a chimney repair in Fargo last month. I had 80 pounds of mix and no way to measure water. An old guy named Rick on the crew told me to squeeze a handful and watch how it holds a ridge. I did that for 3 days straight and my joints came out cleaner than when I used the gauge. Has anyone else switched to the hand test, or do you still stick with a measuring cup?
Rick had you testing mortar by hand squeeze in Fargo for 3 days and the joints came out cleaner than with a gauge? That blows my mind because I always figured the gauge was the only way to get it right. Guess the old guys know something we don't.
