My old foreman swore by using a 3/8 inch joint for everything, even foundations.

I argued with him for years, but after seeing a basement wall I laid with half inch joints start to bow in Toledo, I had to admit he was right. Anyone else have a 'rule' they fought against that turned out to be solid?

Toledo soil must be a special kind of stubborn to prove a point like that. Honestly, some old guys just have a sixth sense for what works in their specific dirt. I guess you don't argue with results, even if the method seems wrong.

Totally get that. My grandpa had the same kind of weird, specific tricks for his garden that made no sense but always worked. You really can't argue with what the dirt likes.

My neighbor in Bowling Green swore by adding wood ash to his tomato beds, which made no sense to me until I saw his plants. I used to think there was one right way to do things, but watching him and hearing stories like beth719's grandpa changed my mind. That local dirt knowledge is real, even if it looks strange to everyone else. You just have to watch what actually grows.
