Dried beans vs canned beans: I did the math on my grocery bill and I'm not going back
So I always grabbed canned beans at the store because they're fast, usually around $1.25 a can. A couple months ago my roommate showed me a 2 pound bag of dried pinto beans for $2.49 that makes like 12 cans worth. That works out to about 20 cents per can equivalent, which is nuts. The catch is you have to soak them overnight and simmer for like 90 minutes, but I just do a big batch on Sunday. Has anyone else made the switch, and do you bother soaking or just do the quick method?
Man, you can take it even further than just buying dry beans. Once you get used to the Sunday batch thing, start looking at other dry stuff too. Rice, oats, lentils, all of it is stupid cheap in bulk compared to the boxed or canned versions. I get a 25 pound bag of rice for like $18 and it lasts me months. Same deal with chicken thighs or a whole pork shoulder, cook it once and you eat off it all week. The upfront work is the only real cost. Soaking overnight is worth it too, the quick method works but the beans come out more even when you soak them.
