My grocery bill hit $34 for the week and I actually ate like a king, here is the boring reason why
Two weeks ago I decided to stop buying meat at the store and hit the Hispanic market on the south side instead. I walked out with 5 pounds of chicken legs for $4.90, a bag of dried pintos, and a giant bag of rice that will outlive me. That Thursday I made a pot of beans with a ham hock I got for $2, and it fed me lunch and dinner for 4 days straight. Friday I roasted all the chicken legs with cumin and lime and shredded the meat into tacos, soup, and a weird but good rice bowl. My total spend for that whole week was $34, and I am not exaggerating when I say I ate better than I did the month I spent $180 on takeout. The thing nobody wants to hear is that cheap eating is boring eating, meaning you eat the same base ingredients all week and just change the sauce. I am convinced seasoning and a big bag of onions do more work than any meal kit ever will. Anyone else have a market or store where the prices are just stupidly better than the big chains, and what do you buy there?
