Was skeptical about hostel kitchen setups...

I used to think cooking in hostels was just a way to save a few bucks, but after a trip to Barcelona last summer I changed my mind. I was paying 12 euros for a basic sandwich at lunch, then saw a guy making pasta in the hostel kitchen for like 2 euros total. That got me trying it myself... and I ended up saving over 80 euros in a week just by making breakfast and dinner there. The real hack is getting to the market near the hostel before they close, they mark down produce 50 percent off around 7 PM. Has anyone else found a specific city where hostel cooking saved them a ton?

I read somewhere that hostel kitchens in Tokyo can actually save you more than eating at 7-Elevens, guess it's all about finding the right markets.

My buddy tried this in Lisbon last fall and ended up cooking almost every meal for a week straight. He hit the local market right before closing and got a huge bag of veggies for like 3 euros, made enough soup to last him days. He still talks about that more than any restaurant meal he had there.
