Heard a coworker say "I just pay bills and hope" and it hit me different

I was in the break room last week and one of the help desk guys said he just pays his bills and hopes there's money left. He's 28 and has no idea where his money goes. I told him I use a simple spreadsheet with three categories: needs, savings, fun. He looked at me like I was speaking another language. Has anyone else found that just tracking one thing, like food spending, is an easier first step for people?

Ngl that spreadsheet idea would go right over my head too back then. What finally clicked for me was just checking my bank balance every morning for like two weeks straight. Seeing the number drop little by little made me actually think before I spent.

Man that balance thing sounds brutal but I get it. I used to just avoid looking at my account for weeks at a time and pretend everything was fine until the overdraft hit.
