I believe skipping guided tours saves cash for local eats, but my travel buddy disagrees.

Self-exploration beats scripted tours every time.

Honestly the best travel moments come from getting lost and asking locals for directions. Those quick chats can lead you to a family run place you'd never find on a map. Guided tours often keep you in a bubble and move too fast to really see a place. Wandering around on your own means you can follow a good smell or a interesting side street, which usually ends with better food and stories.

Totally agree with you harperc79, that's how you find the real stuff. Got lost in this little town in Mexico once, asked a guy fixing his bike where to eat, and he walked me three blocks to his cousin's place. Best tacos I ever had, just a couple plastic tables in a garage. You're right about tours moving too fast, feels like you're just checking boxes. I'd rather spend an hour in one weird little shop than see ten "must-see" spots from a bus window.

Ever find the best food by just following a crowd?
