I put my whole grocery budget in cash for 30 days, and the weird part was what I stopped buying
I read somewhere that people spend about 12 to 15 percent more when they pay with a card, so in January I pulled $140 out in cash every Sunday and that was it for groceries in my house. No card, no app, just a envelope in my glove box. Week one was awful because I kept doing math in my head at the register and putting stuff back. By week three something changed though. I stopped buying the little stuff that I used to grab without thinking, like the $4 fancy olives and a second kind of cheese I never actually needed. I also started planning meals around what was already home instead of what looked good in the store, which cut my trips from 4 a week down to 2. The part that surprised me was I ended the month with $38 still in the envelope, which has literally never happened before. I think the cash just made the money feel real in a way a card never does. Has anyone else done a cash only month, and did you end up keeping the habit or going back to your card?
