Appreciation post: a museum exhibit in Baltimore put the skeleton of a schooner on full display and I stared at the joinery for an hour
Went to the Baltimore Museum of Industry a couple weeks back and they have the hull framing of an old skipjack just hanging there, no skin, so you can see every futtock and floor timber. What got me was there is not a single metal fastener in the whole thing, just wooden pegs and scarfs cut so tight you cannot slide a dollar bill in. I keep thinking about how they built curves that hold up in salt water with nothing but hand tools and patience. Has anyone here built anything with pegged mortise and tenon joints, and did you bother with drawboring or just glue it and hope?
