Rant: I just found out how much weight a basic 2x4 can actually hold and it's wild
I was sketching out a simple loft bed for my kid's room and got worried about the frame. I always thought a 2x4 was just okay for stuff like that, you know? So I went digging in this old building code handbook my dad left me. On page 87, it says a standard 8-foot pine 2x4, laid flat, can hold over 400 pounds across a 4-foot span before you even get into serious bending. That's like two grown adults standing on it. I've been overbuilding simple shelves and workbenches for years, using way more wood than I needed, scared stuff would break. It makes me think about all the extra time and money I spent being too careful. Where did you guys learn the real numbers for stuff like this? I feel like I missed a basic class somewhere.

Page 87 of that handbook mention anything about vertical load?

Right, @martin.tyler, you hit the nail on the head. That whole section just glosses over vertical load like it's not a big deal. I ran into the exact same thing last year on a project, and it caused a real headache. The numbers they give you just don't hold up when you actually put weight on it. Makes you wonder if the people writing it ever built anything in real life.
