Oh man, that reminds me of my old roommate! He refused to sharpen anything and just hacked at stuff. Watching @pipergonzalez's friend with that box must have been the same painful show. It finally clicked for him when a butter knife skidded off a tomato and he nearly cut his thumb off. The time he spent bandaging his hand was way more than just learning to use a sharpening stone. Some people just need to feel the danger before they get it.
