Watch out for those hand grinders with plastic gears

I bought a cheap hand grinder from a restaurant supply store last month and the plastic gear stripped out on the third batch of pork shoulder. Took me two hours to break down the casing and swap in a metal gear I had from an old machine. Has anyone else had this happen with the newer economy models?

Same pattern as cheap blenders and power tools anymore.

I actually gotta push back on that. I think the pattern you're seeing is more about companies figuring out what most people actually need. My KitchenAid blender from 2008 is a tank but I barely use half the speeds they put on it. Meanwhile my buddy's $40 Hamilton Beach makes smoothies just fine and he's had it for years. It's like cars now too - a base model Honda Civic gets you to work just as good as a loaded Accord with leather and a sunroof. Are they really cutting corners or just dropping the fluff most of us don't use?
