I finally fixed my car stereo volume knob after 3 weeks of fighting it
My volume knob started jumping around last month and I figured it was just dirty, so I sprayed some contact cleaner in there and called it done. Two days later it was worse, going from whisper quiet to full blast with the tiniest touch. I pulled the whole head unit out of the dash, which took me a good 45 minutes thanks to one bolt behind the glove box that I could only reach with a wobbly extension. The real problem was a worn out encoder inside, a tiny little wheel that clicks as it spins, and the grease on it had basically turned to glue. I spent another hour looking up the part number and a replacement was only 8 bucks on eBay. Swapped it in and the knob clicks like new again. Has anyone else had a knob go bad on them, or is it just me and my 2008 Honda?
Man that "grease turned to glue" line hit home for me, that is exactly what happens and nobody warns you about it. My 2006 Civic did the same thing, volume would randomly blast or go silent and I thought the whole head unit was toast. I did the same contact cleaner spray first and yeah, it made it worse just like yours. Ended up being the encoder too, cheap little part but such a pain to get to. Glad you got it sorted for 8 bucks instead of dropping a couple hundred on a new stereo, feels good when the fix is that simple after all the swearing.
