Tone testing every drop is fine, but that's not the real problem with buried lines
Everyone in this trade keeps bragging about tone testing every single drop before they backfill, and sure, that catches a broken pair or a bad connector. But I've seen three jobs this year around Fort Worth where the tone was perfect and the modem still wouldn't sync, because nobody checked the bend radius on the 90 they shoved into a tight vault. I get it, tone testing is fast and easy to show on the paperwork, but a sharp kink or a crushed jacket doesn't always kill the tone on every pair, especially with smaller gauge cable. I started doing a quick TDR sweep on anything longer than 200 feet, and it caught a crushed section that tone testing completely missed at a strip mall last Tuesday. Has anyone else found that short DSL or cable runs pass tone but fail on actual signal quality once the customer plugs in?
