Just learned the aperture blade count debate is mostly smoke and I'm kinda mad about it
Spent a rainy Tuesday going through old service notes from a retired tech in Rochester and found out most vintage 50mm lenses use 5 to 8 blades, not the 9 or 10 people brag about online. He wrote that anything past 8 is just marketing talk for most shooters, and the real sunstar shape depends way more on blade curve than how many there are. I tested it on a couple of cheap 6 blade lenses and got cleaner stars than some pricey glass with 9 blades. So all those forum arguments about blade count are pretty much useless noise. The tech also noted that worn blades matter way more than how many you start with, which nobody mentions. Has anyone else pulled apart a lens and been shocked by the real blade count vs what the box claimed?
