Showerthought: Everyone pushes ultrasonic cleaners for shutter blades, but I dunked a sticky Copal shutter in 99% isopropyl and it worked
I was in my basement shop in Boise last Wednesday working on a Nikon FM2 with a shutter that would hang open at 1/250. The go-to advice online is always an ultrasonic bath with special fluid, but my machine was on the fritz and I was impatient. So I poured a shot of 99% isopropyl into a small glass tray, swished the shutter assembly for about 40 seconds, and let it dry for an hour before a tiny drop of watch oil on the pivot. It snapped clean through all speeds on the tester and the guy picked it up Friday. Has anyone else gone the solvent route on leaf shutters, or am I just lucky this one didn't melt?
