Spent 6 months cleaning every lens element before I figured out the real problem
I was fixing a sticky focus ring on a customer's Nikon 50mm and kept stripping the whole thing down to clean the helicoid, then one day I swapped in a fresh set of screws from a donor body and it turned smooth as butter. Turned out the old screws had stretched just enough to bind the ring, and I had been blaming dirt for half a year. Now I check screw torque with a tiny gauge before I touch a cloth. Has anyone else chased a mechanical ghost like this?
