Hot take: A guy at the trailhead in Bend asked why I review gear I've only used twice
This guy saw me packing up after a quick overnight at Sparks Lake and asked how many trips I'd actually taken my $300 backpack on. I said two, and he just laughed and said his 12 year old pack cost him 80 bucks at a garage sale. He wasn't being a jerk about it, he said most reviews he reads come from people who got the item free and used it for a weekend. Now I'm sitting here looking at my own posts wondering how many of them were written after one trip in good weather. Anyone else started asking how many nights someone actually slept in a bag before they trust the review?
Sparks Lake in June is about as easy as gear testing gets, so that guy had a point. I started checking the "used it for X nights" line before I trust any review, and if the person can't say how many nights or what weather, I skip it. Two nights in a tent is a first date, not a marriage. Give me someone who put 40 nights on a bag before they wrote a word.
