Warning: a guy at REI in Denver said my tent stakes were "garbage" and I almost ignored him
He told me the 6 inch aluminum ones I'd used for 3 seasons would bend on hard ground, so I switched to 8 inch steel and haven't snapped one since, has anyone else had a stake fail at the worst possible time?
Oh man, that REI guy wasn't totally wrong but the material thing is backwards, aluminum is actually the softer metal and steel is what holds up better in rocky ground. The length matters too though, 8 inch gives you way more bite so it's not just the steel doing the work. Glad you didn't snap another one either way, mid-storm stake fails are the worst.
