The print shop guy in Buffalo laughed at my logo file and handed me back a flash drive with 14 versions on it
I walked into a small print shop on Elmwood Ave last Tuesday to get 200 flyers made for a block party. I had my design saved as a JPG because that is just what I had. The guy behind the counter looked at it, sighed like I had personally wronged him, and asked if I built it in Canva.
I said yes. He nodded, walked to the back, and came out with a flash drive. Told me he keeps one for people like me. It had 14 versions of my own flyer on it, all exported at different sizes, and he had labeled each one with a marker. Fonts that would print clean, a version with the bleed fixed, one with the colors toned down so they would not turn muddy on paper.
Turns out he does this for half the neighborhood. I asked why he bothers and he just said the machine does not care how pretty your screen looks. Whole thing cost me $38 and I learned more in 10 minutes than in a week of watching tutorials.
Has anyone else had a print guy quietly fix their file? I want to know if this is a Buffalo thing or happens everywhere.
Did he happen to say if he does this with photos too? I get that the guy is saving people from bad prints, but the part that stuck with me is he keeps a whole drive of fixed files ready to go, which means he has done it enough times to know exactly what breaks on a home printer versus his machine. That kind of hands-on fix beats any tutorial because he is working backward from what actually comes out of the machine, not what looks good on a screen.
